It’s About the Processes, Stupid

If you haven’t had an opportunity to listen to Bob Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour, you’re missing a real treat. Bob Dylan hangs up his guitar and harmonica and slips into the persona of a radio host. It’s an amazing transformation - his voice is prefect for the show, and the musical anecdotes and revelations he brings seem so much more insightful because, well, *Bob Dylan said it*.

In case you’re not a fan, the show does not feature any of Dylan’s music, but in each crafted episode there are a number of tracks loosely associated with a ‘Theme’. In the past shows have covered such diverse themes as ‘Days of the week’, ‘Christmas’, and one of my favourites ‘Cadillac’. The Genius of the show is that Dylan is telling us what we already know. Often during the course of one of the hours I’ve noted tracks or artists I knew I liked, but didn’t realise who they were, or what band they played with. Rather than idle DJ patter, Bob then fills in to give some of the context and background to the track, giving obscure artists on the fringes of popular music the credit they deserve, and showing that often musical changes don’t just happen, lots of performers contribute before a breakthrough can occur. In effect it is a lesson in 20th century music, with the best Professor around.

Often with clients there is a period of discussion and reflection, before we can embark on mapping out initial processes, and jointly looking for problems, and where we can bring process benefits. Sometimes other solutions have been tried - such as purchasing new systems, or expensive consultancy exercises. Very often this does not solve the core problem - if the processes are not correct then it’s pretty difficult to run your business efficiently. Even then, it takes multiple individual performances before process change can happen.

Our job is to assist our clients with this change. If anyone requests it, I can even bring along some good music.
